An XML sitemap tells search engines which pages on your site exist and how they relate to each other, helping crawlers discover and index your content efficiently. But a malformed sitemap can silently break indexing: a single invalid URL, an oversized file, or a bad date format can cause Google and Bing to skip your sitemap entirely. This validator fetches your sitemap (or sitemap index), parses it safely, and checks it against the sitemaps.org protocol. It counts your URLs, measures the file size, verifies that every <loc> is a well-formed absolute URL, and validates optional <lastmod>, <changefreq>, and <priority> fields. Gzipped sitemaps and multi-file sitemap indexes are supported.
Enter your sitemap URL, such as https://example.com/sitemap.xml, and click Validate. You can also enter just your domain and the tool will check the default /sitemap.xml location. The report shows the sitemap type, total URL count, uncompressed size, and a pass, warning, or fail badge. Below that you get a list of any validation issues with the exact offending value, and a sample of the first 25 URLs with their last-modified dates and priorities. For a sitemap index, the tool lists each child sitemap and fetches a few of them to summarize their URL counts.
Keep each sitemap under 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. If you exceed either limit, split your URLs across multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index. Use a single canonical protocol throughout, since mixing http and https URLs in one sitemap sends mixed signals to crawlers. The <lastmod> date must be a valid W3C datetime, and <priority> must be between 0.0 and 1.0. Always submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools after validating, and re-run this check whenever you regenerate it.
